Cincinnati: For a city dubbed “Porkopolis” because of its prolific slaughterhouses, some good news for farm animals has been coming out of Cincinnati lately. Last month, a half-ton cow bolted from a stockyard, jumped a 7-foot fence, and remained on the lam for 11 days before being captured and taken to a sanctuary in New York. Now, following some gentle persuasion by PETA, Mayor Charlie Luken has named Earth Day, April 22, “Go Veggie for the Environment” Day.

Raising animals on factory farms isn’t just cruel, it’s also ecologically devastating. The livestock industry requires more water than all other uses of water combined, causes more water pollution than any other activity, and is responsible for 85 percent of U.S. soil erosion.

A copy of Mayor Luken’s “Go Veggie for the Environment” Day proclamation follows.

Be It Proclaimed:
Whereas
, Earthday is to be celebrated on April 22 in the City of Cincinnati, as well as in other cities throughout our country with variety of events; and

Whereas, according to Christopher Flavin, President of the Worldwatch Institute “There is no question that the choice to become a vegetarian, or lower meat consumption, is one of the most positive lifestyles changes a person could make in terms of reducing one’s personal impact on the environment”; and

Whereas, according to Dr. Michael Fox, of the Humane Society of the United States “Agribusiness has developed an immense slaughtering machine that causes great suffering to animals and creates long-term environmental disasters”; and

Whereas, according to Jim Motavelli, Editor of E Magazine; “Evidence shows that our meat-based diet is bad for the environment, aggravates global hunger, brutalizes animals and compromises our health”; and

Whereas, “There is not question that the choice to become a vegetarian, or lower meat consumption, is one of the most positive lifestyle changes a person could make in terms of reducing one’s personal impact on the environment” according to Christopher Flavin President of the WorldWatch Institute.

Now, Therefore, I, Charlie Luken,
